A Special Note From Miami Mayor 'Chuy' Canizales
3/20/2009
Miami Town council met last night at 6:30 pm in a special meeting, minus Councilmen Medina and Dalley, who were attending a previously scheduled class. Only 2 items on the agenda at which Freeport-McMoRan Miami's Environmental Manager, Jay Spehar made a presentation to the council about the proposed new Waste Water Treatment facility, to be engineered, constructed and turned over to the Town of Miami by the fourth quarter of 2010. The facility is to replace the old system which had evaporative ponds atop the tailings across from Wal-mart, and which must be closed and environmentally reclaimed, in keeping with corporate policy. The old facility which had a capacity of 330,000 gallons per day throughput, will be replaced by a new state of the art Waste Water Package Plant with a capacity of 640,000 gallons per day, nearly doubling the capacity of the old facility, allowing for the potential for added revenues for the town who will be better able to serve the areas in Claypool and beyond towards Midland City. The second item on the agenda was the approval of the Letter of Intent that was approved by the council, unanimously, minus the abset councilmen, and then signed by Mayor Canizales. Of course, the intended added revenues will not be possible unless the second phase of Miami's plan to rebuild their collector system also becomes a reality. This plan is hoped to be addressed by Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and his visit to Miami on Sunday, who apparently will also be accompanied by Congressman Ed Pastor and other dignitaries. The public is invited to hear Mayor Gordon at 11:20 am with regard to his visit and his suggestions and ideas. The venue is still being determined, but will be at either the town hall, the veteran's memorial park or the Bullion Plaza gym. That information will be passed on as it becomes available.
Thanks, Chuy
Lauren's Institute For Education 3rd Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser
3/20/2009
Lauren's Institute For Education (L.I.F.E.), a not-for-profit organization, is servicing the needs of the east valley special children to offer all of the therapies at one location. It offers occupational, speech, physical, music and various habilitation therapies at the same location. L.I.F.E. also provides a specially designed, accessible classroom and play arena setting for the children's enjoyment. Since L.I.F.E. opened, it has been an overwhelming success with regards to servicing these children. Their 168 employees are currently seeing over 400 children with another 600 children on certain therapy waiting lists. The center is 11,000 square feet and has multiple therapists working with these children daily. They have many plans for the center and for starting a school next year. They are in the process of leasing another 2,200 square feet to meet the current needs of the children and provide an alternative to the public school system for some of these children.
The goal is to provide these services without it being a financial burden to the family and in order to accomplish this, they must rely on the generosity and support of those who believe in the center and future endeavors. They are having a golf tournament fund raiser, dinner, & silent auction on April 17th, at the Raven Golf Course at South Mountain, 3636 E. Baseline Rd., Phoenix, Arizona 85042. The event starts at 12:30 pm.
If you are unable to participate in the golf tournament fundraiser and would still like to make a donation, please visit their website at laurensinstitute.org to find out how.
April Is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month
3/20/2009
This April, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) will once again commemorate Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month – an extremely important month for animals. After the walk has concluded at Noon, a festival will feature adoptable animals from Town Lake Animal Center and the Austin Humane Society, discounted services and information from local spay/neuter groups like Animal Trustees of Austin and Emancipet, music, refreshments for both humans and canines, ASPCA experts, and a variety of pet-friendly festivities that will appeal to pet-lovers of all ages (including a doggy obstacle course!).

Also new to this year’s celebration of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month is the ASPCA Ambassadors Program. ASPCAAmbassadors.org is a new online network which will give ASPCA supporters across the country the chance to become an “ASPCA Ambassador” by either registering to participate in an ASPCA Event – such as our upcoming April ‘Wag-n-Walk’ events in Austin, Tex., or Venice Beach, Calif., or by holding a personal event this April in their community – be it a bake sale, car wash, or bike-athon on our behalf. If you are planning an event, please visit ASPCAAmbassadors.org between March 1st and May 4th, to enter the ASPCA’s Community Leader Contest – which will award the winner with the most extraordinary ‘Go Orange’ efforts a $500 American Express Gift Card and a $1,000 grant to the animal shelter or rescue group of their choice.
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month is held appropriately each year in April to honor the anniversary of the ASPCA’s founding in 1866. For more information about the ASPCA’s rich history and how you can be a voice for animals, please visit ASPCAApril.org.

Follow Arizona's Stimulus Money
3/19/2009
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has launched a new web site that is dedicated in providing information on the federal stimulus dollars made available to Arizona through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. The website, azrecovery.gov is intended to serve as Arizona’s one-stop-shop for information on federal stimulus funding and enable citizens to track expenditures in an open, accountable and transparent manner.
“We encourage every Arizonan to participate in the monitoring, allocation and use of Arizona's received stimulus funds and to keep track of how the Act will serve our fellow citizens and its impact upon Arizona’s future growth and success,” stated Brewer.
As required by Section 1607 of the ARRA of 2009, Governor Brewer submitted a formal letter to President Barack Obama on March 5th, 2009, requesting use of funds provided by the Act and formally confirming her intent to utilize federal dollars for the State of Arizona. In the letter, Governor Brewer attests that such funds will be used to create jobs and promote economic growth in a manner that is in the best interest of the taxpayers of Arizona.
“As Governor, I am committed to serving all Arizona citizens, and particularly in these tough economic times,” stated Brewer. “My Administration is committed to utilizing stimulus funds received from the Act to create jobs, to protect our most vulnerable, and grow Arizona’s future; but also, do so without further increasing the state budget deficit.”
Arizona joins a growing number of states that have also unveiled economic recovery Web sites. Because the stimulus initiative is in its early stages, and federal agencies are still determining their rules and regulations, this site does not yet provide the entire spectrum of information that will be provided in the months to follow. Future capabilities being considered for inclusion on this site are:
· Break down of all stimulus funds released to Arizona · Press Releases on Arizona stimulus package · Federal ARRA Press Releases · Interactive search services associated with stimulus data · Interactive application for grants
Arizona’s recovery web site will update and add information as it becomes available.

An urgent message from the Miami Town Council to the residents of Miami:
3/17/2009
The Town Council for the town of Miami is very concerned about adequate fire protection for its residents and regrets the dispute and differences that have arisen between the Town of Miami and the Tri-City Fire District. The council is doing all it can to insure the most efficient fire protection possible while protecting the assets and financial abilities of the town. The Town of Miami has enlisted the cooperation of the City of Globe and Chief Gameros of the Globe Fire Department. Globe Fire has already begun monitoring and testing the fire hydrants within our town limits and will be conducting fire inspections as required by regulations. However, there is no escaping the additional time added for emergency fire calls, which is between 6 to 10 minutes. For this reason, we are asking all residents of Miami , as a safety precaution, please do what you can to minimize the potential for tragedy. Take time to clear any dry foliage, undergrowth or piles of debris that may be close to your home or a structure. Report fire hazards to the Town Hall or the Miami Police Department. Be sure that you have a working fire alarm system in appropriate locations throughout your home. Make a plan for an emergency evacuation in case of fire and instruct family members that once out of a structure or building fire, STAY OUT. Do not go back in. Finally, teach all members of your family the drop and roll techniques for extinguishing fires on clothing. This is a serious situation that, given time we will improve with either a new agreement with the Tri-City Fire district, or the return of our own viable volunteer fire department. Until then, we must all take responsibility to do what we can to minimize fire hazards or tragedy. The council thanks you for your support and understanding during this very serious time for the town of Miami.
Miami Town Council
Thanks, Chuy
