Mack McCarley Tapped As Prescott's Antelope Hills New GM

2/24/2010

Prescott City Manager Steve Norwood is pleased to announce that veteran golf professional and recent Arizona Golf Hall of Fame inductee Mack McCarley has assumed the position of General Manager at Antelope Hills Golf Course. “Based upon Mack’s extensive professional experience, his vision of the facility’s future, and his understanding of tourism and local business, we felt that he was an ideal choice.”

A 40 year member of the PGA, McCarley is no stranger to Antelope Hills. He was head professional at the course for 11 years (1970-1981) and has been working as interim manager since Feb. 10th, following the departure of former GM Paul Parker.

McCarley has been characterized as “a driving force within the Southwest Section of the PGA” serving two terms as its president. He was named Professional of the Year in 1977 and 1978, and is a five-time recipient of the prestigious Horton Smith Award for contributions to PGA Education. He holds a B.A. degree in Mass Communications from Arizona State University.

“Mack is on board with city council’s goals of expanding the Antelope Hills golf program and establishing relationships with Arizona’s wider golf community,” said Mayor Marlin Kuykendall. “He’s home again, and we’re pleased to have him back.”

Flying Debris Kills Fan At Phoenix NHRA Race

2/22/2010

The incident happened during the first-round of the Top Fuel drag eliminations during the NHRA's Arizona Nationals in Phoenix on Sunday.

Top Fuel driver Antron Brown was making his way down the track, when, according to witnesses the left-rear tire and wheel came off his car sending into a retaining wall on the left side of the track. This caused the dragster to turn onto its right side and slide down the track. The rollcage itself kept rolling numerous times before stopping upside-down.

Brown walked away uninjured, but was brought to Chandler Regional Medical Center to be checked out anyway.

The same couldn't be said for a female fan that had to be taken to an area hospital with what was reported as serious injuries after the tire flew into the stands. She later died as a result of today's accident.

2/09/2010

The postseason drama has already ramped up following the stunning, 31-17, Saints' victory over the Colts in Super Bowl 44.

To start with;

Panthers star DE Julius Peppers is upset with the team and how they have "ignored him in the offseason" and that he no longer wants a long-term contract with them.

The Browns have released troubled WR Donte Stallworth.

The Raiders have hired Clancy Pendergast as an assistant. Still no word on the Tom Cable situation.

Brett Favre, 'nuff said.

Lesnar To Make Return To UFC

1/20/2010

UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is planning on making his return to the cage to fight the winner of the Frank Mir-Shane Carwin match coming up in March. The winner of the March fight will serve as the interim heavyweight champion. However, if the winner of that fight is unable to compete by the yet to be determined Summer date, then Lesnar will defend his title against the winner of the Feb. 21st, match between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez.

Lesnar came down with a mysterious illness last fall and forced him to withdraw from MMA action since then. After months of test results, he was diagnosed with diverticulitis, a disease that affects the digestive system. The disease almost forced Lesnar to undergo career ending surgery, but he opted to treat the illness with the provided medications. He gained back 30 of the 40 pounds that he had lost while being in the hospital and is said to be symptom-free.

Lesnar's last fight was last July, when he beat Frank Mir to retain the title.

A Message From The Arizona Game and Fish Department:

12/04/2009

Deer poachers sought by Game and Fish

YUMA, Ariz. – Reward money is being offered for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the illegal killing of an adult female mule deer near Wellton, Ariz.
The Thanksgiving Day poaching is under investigation by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. The deer was shot in the front left shoulder and left waste in the desert. The subjects also left beer cans and trash behind.

This was a closed season poaching which occurred near a popular hunting area known as "Radium Hot Springs" located just east of Wellton. This incident occurred at night or in the early morning on or near Nov. 25 and 26.

"The doe was shot with a small caliber rifle and just left to waste," according to Richard Myers, law enforcement specialist for Game and Fish. "Poachers are not hunters and those who commit these acts not only steal from the resource, they steal from the residents of Arizona."
Anyone with information which leads to an arrest in this case can get a cash reward of up to $1,000 by calling the Operation Game Thief hotline toll-free at (800) 352-0700. Caller identities may remain confidential upon request. You can also report online at www.azgfd.gov/thief.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is asking for the public’s help in finding the individual responsible for the illegal killing of a large bull elk found shot on July 31st. It was left in the vicinity of Pinot Ridge on Bluegrass Ranch Drive in Pinetop.

"The poacher left this majestic animal to waste, and we need assistance from the public to find the individual responsible," says Bruce Sitko, spokesman in the department’s Pinetop office. "This isn’t the action of a hunter; it’s an act of a criminal stealing wildlife assets and resources from the people of Arizona."

Hunter Education Program Registration

7/27/2009

There will be a registration for the Arizona Game and Fish Dept. Hunter Education Program during the Open House at the Charles Bejarano School on Aug. 4th, at 5 pm. The cost for the class is $8 per student. Students will need a parent’s signature and a hunter ID number. The Arizona Game and Fish Department can issue an ID number to anyone not wishing to use their social security number. They can be reached at 1-800-824-2456.

This course is designed to teach the safe handling of firearms and ammunition in the home and in the field, safe hunting habits, outdoor ethics, outdoor survival, wildlife management techniques, & more.

The course is open to all ages and family participation is encouraged. The Hunter Education Program is required by law for youth ages ten to fourteen to hunt big game. If a student turns 9 by the time they graduate, they may receive a Hunter Education card and a graduation certificate. The card will not become valid until their 10th birthday. The age that they may hunt big game has not changed, only the age that they can graduate the course. This will prevent the problem of a student turning 10 the day before the hunt and not being able to get in a class.

The Hunter Education Program in Globe-Miami starts on Aug. 6th, and will run through Aug. 27th, every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 pm until 9 pm at the Charles Bejarano Middle School, 4635 B Ragus Rd. in Miami, with Range Day on Sat., Aug. 29th, from 9 am until 3 pm at the Globe-Miami Gun Club on Bixby Rd.

All classroom hunter safety education courses are taught by Arizona Game and Fish Department certified volunteer instructors.

Rage in the Cage 129 – Eastern Invasion Results

6/29/2009

Rage in the Cage 129 – Eastern Invasion, was held in Globe this past Saturday and was met with a warm reception.

The day didn’t go without its own share of problems. The light rain early on caused the speakers to go out and the winds created an understandable delay in Vince Morgan’s motorcycle stunts. Despite that, there was a solid turn out and these fights left the crowd wanting more. And Vince was able to perform a spectacular array of ariel stunts for the crowd after the fights.

In the coming days, be sure to check the Rage in the Cage site for footage from the event. It was also hinted that when they return, they’ll be at Apache Gold.

These results are courtesy of John Petrilli:

Fight 1 didn’t get out of Round 1, as Ty Upshur was able to close the deal with a rear naked choke on Manny Morales at the 2:44 mark.

Fight 2 ended at 2:27 in the Round 1 with John Paul Valdez getting Brent Agee to submit via a rear naked choke.

Fight 3 also ended with a rear naked choke, but a little quicker in Round 1. Dellan Langellier won this bout against Adrian Guerrero in Round 1 at 1:34.

Fight 4 made it to Round 3 and ended with Mike Moritz applying a successful arm bar on Justin Fletcher, forcing the submission at 2:28.

Fight 5 was won by an impressive kimura lock placed on Jake Ramsey by Josh Stockman to force a submission at 2:17 in Round 1.

Fight 6 came to an end at 2:31 in round 2 after much maneuvering on the mat when Jason Long was able to lock in an arm bar on Mike Zanski.

Fight 7 came down to the judge’s, who decided 3-0, that Andy Perez won his bout against Aaron Caryl.

Fight 8 was a slugfest between Jeff Peltz and Kevin Moore. Jeff had an added boost of energy by fighting in front of a hometown crowd. Jeff did win via Knock-out in what turned out to be the night’s shortest fight.

Fight 9 was for the RITC Regional Welterweight Title and came down to a judge’s decision with a 2-1 verdict in favor of Jeff Horlacher over David Barnes.

Fight 10 was to declare a Champ for the vacant Super Heavyweight Title. Adam Padilla was declared the winner by ref stoppage after Adam put Vince Lucero in a guillotine choke at 1:20 in Round 1. Vince was not pleased because he didn’t tap or pass out. A rematch has been tentatively scheduled for Rage in the Cage 132 in Casa Grande on Aug 1st.

The highly anticipated fight between Shannon Ritch and Drew Fickett did not occur. Shannon was ready for the fight, but Fickett did not pass his pre-fight physical and not allowed to compete by the Arizona Commission. The rumor is, that Fickett showed up to the fight inebriated and failed a Breathalyzer.

Before You Launch That Boat, Take These Simple Precautions

6/19/2009

With the beginning of summer approaching, more than 140,000 registered Arizona boat owners are enjoying our nation’s waters, one of America’s most popular pastimes as temperature rise. Whether using sailboats, powerboats or personal watercrafts such as jet-skis, the enjoyment of boating also presents dangers. As a result, it’s important to protect yourself by understanding and following some basic safety rules.

“Many boating accidents are preventable and knowing the causes of common accidents helps to avoid them,” said Wayne Smith, Allstate Exclusive agent from Mesa, Ariz. “Nearly 70 percent of boating accidents involve operator factors such as operator inattention, careless or reckless operation, operator inexperience, no proper lookout and operating at an unsafe speed.”

The Allstate Safe Boater Pledge, approved by the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Safe Boating Council, recommends that boaters:

Take a boating education course. Allstate offers discounts (subject to availability and qualifications) to boaters who have successfully completed qualifying boating courses from groups such as the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and U.S. Power Squadron.
Make wearing life jackets a rule. Most laws require having U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets on board your vessel (for all passengers).
Don’t mix drinking and boating.
Know the weather and water conditions.
File a float plan; give the information to a friend or relative who can call for help if you do not return as scheduled.
Observe the nautical rules-of-the-road including speed limits.
Report emergencies via Ch. 16 on a marine VHF-FM radio.
Do not discharge oil, trash or sewage into the water.
Properly insure the boat and make sure it has sufficient coverage.

Smith reminds boaters to be sure they are adequately insured. “Boat owners insurance won’t prevent your boat from sinking, but it can definitely help keep your finances afloat when accidents occur.”

Boat insurance can provide year-round protection for your boat, motor, and equipment from such hazards as:

Theft/vandalism.
Windstorm, hail, and lightning.
Fire, explosion.
Damage in transit, collision, and sinking.

For more information on boating safety or other safety topics, contact a local Allstate agent at allstate.com.

AZGFD Free Fishing Days

6/02/2009

From azgfd.net

Hey kids, if your parents didn’t get a fishing license yet this year, you can still take them fishing for free during the first two Saturdays of June, advise Arizona Game and Fish Department officials.

Arizona’s Free Fishing Days celebrating National Fishing and Boating Week are on two consecutive Saturdays, June 6th and 13th.

“With most of our lakes full for a second year in a row thanks to excellent winter rains and snow pack, this is a phenomenal time to get your parents out fishing,” said Rory Aikens, the fishing report editor for Game and Fish. “It’s up to you kids to make sure your parents don’t suffer from an outdoor recreation deficiency.”

Check the Game and Fish Department’s Web site at azgfd.gov for the latest fishing report so you can best plan your fishing outing. The Web site also lists the latest fishing clinics in case your parents need some basic tutelage on the fine art of angling.

“Remember kids, at any time of year you can sign your parents up for any of our fishing clinics even if they don’t have a fishing license. Those who are registered for a fishing clinic don’t need a license during the hours and location of the clinic,” Aikens advised.

For more tips on how to take your parents fishing, see the accompanying article (condensed) that appeared in the May-June 2008 edition of Arizona Wildlife Views magazine.

Zach Powell was able to take advantage of this and bring Valenvia home thanks to a sacrifice fly, and a 3-2 lead. In the 5th inning, Billy Kidd was driven in by a ground out via Nelson to bring the score to what it's final would eventually be, 4-2.

The final out came when Brave's catcher CJ Dalmacio dove to his left making an incredible grab off of a foul tip that sent the Braves players and fans into a celebratory frenzy. Free Girls Lacrosse Clinic Coming To Scottsdale In May

4/21/2009

The fast-paced, highly entertaining and flourishing sport of women’s lacrosse will come to the Valley, May 6th thru May 9th. Players, parents, fans, coaches and officials will all have the opportunity to participate in the week’s activities.

The US Lacrosse 2009 Women’s Division Intercollegiate Associates (WDIA) National Championship tournament will take place at the Scottsdale Sports Complex with first-round games starting at 9 am on May 6th, and concluding with the championship game at 12:30 pm on May 9th. The top 16 women’s collegiate club teams in the nation will compete for the title of US Lacrosse WDIA National Champion.

Before the championship game on Saturday, AZ Girls Lacrosse (AZGL) will bring 200 girls lacrosse sticks to the Scottsdale Sports Complex and run a free lacrosse clinic for girls in grades K-9. The free “200 StiX” event is open to all skill levels, including girls who have never played lacrosse but want to try it. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from top Arizona high school coaches and players. The clinic runs from 10 am to 12 pm with registration beginning at 9:30 am. The event will take place on fields 9 and 10 at the Scottsdale Sports Complex located at 8081 E. Princess Drive (Northeast corner of Bell Road and Hayden Road) in Scottsdale. We encourage a fun and learning environment because that’s what lacrosse is all about,” explained coach Tricia Platten of AZGL. “AZGL hopes that the 200 StiX event will introduce local girls to lacrosse and empower them with new skills to foster the next generation of women lacrosse players.”

For those looking to wear the stripes rather play on the field, US Lacrosse will host a free Introduction to Officiating clinic at the Scottsdale Sports Complex on Wed. May 6th, from 6 pm to 8 pm.

We’re hoping to get more people interested in officiating lacrosse in Arizona because it’s a fun way to help grow the sport and get some exercise!”

Extreme Beatdown Results

4/13/2009

Extreme Beatdown at the Apache Gold Casino and Resort was this past Saturday and was quite a show with a good mix of fights at varying weight classes. Here’s the short info on the action as heard on the Ride 94 News:

The 1st match of the night saw Heavyweight’s Seth Harrison & Jason Karpel last until 1:30 of the first round with Karpel defeating Harrison via rear naked choke

The only fight to last all three rounds and be decided by split decision was that of Lightweight’s Chris Gruetzemacher & Josh Gaskins. The judges awarded the first round to Gaskins, but Gruetzemacher’s solid efforts in Rounds 2 and 3 earned him the victory.

Another Round 1 victory of the evening was Jeremy Larsen causing Jeff Horlatcher to submit via rear naked choke at 4:44 in this Middleweight match-up.

At 1:34 of round 1, of more Light Heavyweight action, Shane De Zee caused Jesse “Kid Hercules” Forbes to tapout due to an onslaught of monstrous punches landed by Forbes on the back mount.

The Middleweight fight of Chris Hugh & Ray “C4” Steinbeiss was next and ended with a nice reverse triangle choke from side mount by Steinbeiss to defeat Hugh at 2:19 of round 1.
