Russell Gulch Landfill Fire

According to the release:

:A fire that began Sunday evening at the Russell Gulch Landfill in Globe has been contained, but crews remain on scene to monitor hotspots.
The landfill remains closed Monday, April 22 and possibly also Tuesday, April 23.
Revisit the Gila County Government Facebook page Tuesday for an update or call Russell Gulch Landfill staff at 928-425-7470 to inquire about hours or re-opening.
The Tri-City Fire Department received a call Sunday, April 21, reporting that the Russell Gulch Landfill was on fire.
After gaining access to the landfill at 5:45 p.m., the Gila County Sheriff’s Office determined the fire was contained to Cell 3A and that no structures nor vegetation were in jeopardy.
Gila County staff arrived on scene shortly thereafter, and staff from General Services, Consolidated Roads and Landfill Division performed fire suppression.
Tri-City remained on site as emergency standby until the fire was contained at about 8:45 p.m. and remained on standby.
Gila County staff members are working to extinguish one area that continues to flame after being extinguished.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.”

An update from 4-23-24 added:

“The Russel Gulch Landfill will be open today for green waste and metal loads only. All loads will be inspected.
The landfill will reopen tomorrow allowing two vehicles at a time for trash debris.
We would like to remind residents and commercial haulers that tires, electronics, batteries, liquids, chemicals and paints are not permitted in the landfill.
The landfill will accept tires, batteries, and electronics in a designated area.”
